Thousands enjoy Gosport heritage parties

Two community events attracted over 4,000 adults and children, who came to party and share their views on projects that are improving and protecting Gosport's famous heritage.

People flocked to Rowner for the first event on Saturday 2 March, and the following Saturday (9 March), a second family-friendly party took place in Lawrence Square. Both were facilitated by Gosport Borough Council, and the many visitors enjoyed entertainment from local musicians, storytelling, fun and games, and more.

Joining in the fun were Gosport and Hampshire charities, schools, community groups and public services, along with workshops with local professional artists, martial arts and gymnastics experts.

The parties were to showcase and get feedback on Gosport's Heritage Action Zone (HAZ) projects, which are being led by Historic England in partnership with the borough council, to restore and protect Gosport's military heritage, from barracks and trenches to green spaces.

Visitors completed nearly 1,300 feedback forms, sharing their opinions on HAZ and other town projects. In exchange they were given tokens for free ice cream, face painting, cakes and snacks and activities including bouncy moon boots.

Cllr Peter Chegwyn, Leader of Gosport Borough Council, said: "Both events were a huge success and it was great that so many people came to have fun, connect with local groups and organisations, and share their views on the exciting Heritage Action Zone work taking place.

"We are so proud of the town's military history, and together with Historic England, we are ensuring our assets and green spaces are preserved and will be enjoyed for many years to come."

The feedback gathered will form part of the end of project reporting and aid future projects for the town.
