Voter Authority Certificate - what they are and how to apply for one

Voter ID - Voter Authority Certificate

From 4 May 2023, registered electors will need to show a form of photo identification (ID) before they can vote in person at a polling station.

If you are registered to vote you can use one of the accepted photographic ID (opens in a new window). If you do not have any of the accepted photographic ID available, you will be able to apply for a free Voter Authority Certificate specific for the purpose of voting.  You will be able to apply either in person, by post or online and in good time ahead of polls taking place.

Applications for Voter Authority Certificates will open on Monday, 16 January 2023.

You can apply for a Voter Authority Certificate online via the gov.uk website: Apply for a Voter Authority Certificate

Please note this only affects people voting in person at polling stations, postal voters have their identification verified by their signatures and date of births.

What is a Voter Authority Certificate?

A Voter Authority Certificate is a new free voter document available for those without any other form of photo ID.
