Listed Buildings

A 'Listed Building' is one that has been included on the Secretary of State's List of Buildings of Architectural or Historic Interest. The current list for Gosport has over 200 entries, covering approximately 500 buildings and/or structures. They are classified in the following way:

Grade I
These are buildings of exceptional architectural or historic interest.

Grade II*
These are particularly important buildings of more than special interest.

Grade II
Buildings of special architectural interest which warrant every effort being made to preserve them.

Structures other than buildings can also be classified as Listed Buildings; these can include items such as red telephone boxes, boundary walls, milestones, tombs and monuments.

Everything within the curtilage or boundary of a Listed Building may be listed including, for example, outhouses or boundary walls (except post 1948 free-standing structures). Every entry on the List includes a description of the building or structure. When a building is listed, the entire structure, both internally and externally, is protected, including historic fixtures and fittings. The List entry is only used as a means of identifying the location of a building on a streetscene and does not list or detail all parts of the structure, nor fixtures or fittings, which may be listed. You are advised to contact the Conservation and Design Section to determine whether a part of a building, or a building within its curtilage, is considered to be covered by the listing designation.
