Digital Peninsula
Our strategy to create a Digital Peninsula aims to boost our economy while also tackling digital exclusion among some of our more vulnerable residents.
The programme was awarded £1m by the Government's UK Shared Prosperity Fund. A range of projects have been running with community groups across the borough up until March 2025, which are set out below:
What's happening next
Revamping the Discover Gosport websiteHelping people Discover Gosport's heritage, culture and businessesWe're revamping our Discover Gosport website to better promote our local businesses and attractions for residents and visitors alike. We're also be using the Discover Gosport Facebook page to highlight events and things to do in the borough, using new photo and video content. | New digital totems in our town centreNew digital signs to help people find their way around and discover what's onWe'll be installing several 'digital totems', double-sided signs that can show live and up to date information about local events and services, in the town centre high street. |
New interpretation signs at key heritage sitesWe're installing small signs with QR code at important cultuiral and historic sites, to link visitors to contextual online information, stories and multimedia about each location. This is especially important for places like natural spaces that might not have existing information available online. | Free websites for Gosport businessesDozens of Gosport businesses are receiving a free custom-designed website to help them promote their products and services more effectively. Digital Accelerator Programme30 businesses, both established and start-ups, are receiving dedicated training to help them understand the digital technologies available to help expand their businesses. They'll receive dedicated training and mentoring from Solent Partners on business-specific issues like selling online, using AI, cyber security, and systems for managing customer relationships. What's happened so far
Free IT and online training for residentsHundreds of residents have received training to help with day-to-day online tasks such as banking, booking a GP appointment, looking for a job or helping children with homework. With the help of Citizens Advice Gosport, we ran a pilot project offering training for older people in council sheltered housing schemes, homeless individuals and families in council hostels. We also funded the Rowner Community Trust to deliver training to their local community. Led by Citizens Advice Gosport | Digital and Wellbeing HubsWe've set up a Digital and Wellbeing Hub on the High Street in Gosport town centre and have supported Elson and Lee community hubs to do the same in their spaces. Space for all programmeHundreds of schoolchildren aged 7 to 14 years old across Gosport have been enjoying space themed activities to learn digital skills, led by University of Portsmouth experts. From programming moon buggies to learning how to use Google Earth, this programme aims to inspire young people to develop skills for a career in STEM. Led by University of Portsmouth
| New Generation digital music projectThe New Generation digital music project led by young people has been developing and celebrating upcoming musicians. Participants received mentoring, training and support from industry experts to create a 'Scene+Heard' digital music magazine, social media, podcast, and monthly student night to promote and celebrate local young talent. Unlocked youth voice projectThe voices of young people from across the borough have been amplified through film and audio recordings, capturing what Gosport means to them and what they want to see in the future. Groups of young people helped create the material - also giving them the opportunity to develop skills in digital storytelling, and igniting an interest in related careers. Led by Breaking Barriers and Hampshire Cultural Trust | Oh My Gosport - short films from and about GosportTeams from different community organisations learned how to plan, shoot, and edit short films. These also included a group of entrepreneurial women in business, giving them access to bespoke training as well as networking and mentoring opportunities. A series of films exploring the future of Gosport - including ideas for less plastic and car pollution, looking after wildlife and more leisure facilities - feature in this film showcase. Business workshops and 1-2-1 trainingDozens of local heritage, tourism, culture businesses have received free training on everything from setting up a website through to using TikTok, thanks to a new programme of workshops and 1-2-1 sessions with a marketing expert, running from summer 2024 to spring 2025. UK Shared Prosperity Fund
The Digital programme has received £1m from the UK government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund and is part of a wider programme to boost digital skills in the borough - including promoting heritage and tourism businesses online.
The UK Shared Prosperity Fund aims to improve pride in place and increase life chances across the UK investing in communities and place, supporting local business, and people and skills. For more information, visit the UKSPF website.
