VE Day street parties to be held across Gosport
VE Day street parties will be taking place all over Gosport, after Gosport Borough Council approved a host of grant applications.
The council invited residents and local groups to apply for £100 towards the cost of parties.
At the Grants Subs Board, councillors rubber stamped 33 bids, handing out £3,300 for parties from the council's community fund.
It gives the green light for celebrations to happen all over the borough so Gosport communities can celebrate the 80th anniversary of VE Day on 8 May in style.
Among those given grants, parties will be taking place for the residents of Five Towers, Waterloo Road, Proctor Drive, Shalbourne Road, Parker Close, Normandy Gardens, Lodge Gardens, and many other locations.
Local schools including Lee infant and nursery school, Rowner Infants and St John's CofE Primary got £100 grants.
Elson Church, Elson Community Library, Lee Hub and the Royal Naval Association Club will also be throwing parties.
Gosport Borough Council Leader Cllr Peter Chegwyn said:
"May 8 marks 80 years since victory was declared to end the Second World War in Europe, and Gosport communities can now celebrate the momentous occasion with our support.
"Gosport played such an integral role during the war and we will be honouring our naval history with colourful street parties on different dates in early May. I know residents and families will come out in force to make this anniversary one to truly remember."
The street parties will be taking place on different days around the anniversary, a list will be available on the council's website nearer the time. Many of the parties are for residents of streets, housing blocks or groups, we advise people to contact the organisers directly if they wish to attend.
