Gosport Borough Council undertakes maintenance of trees situated on Council land such as Housing and Leisure (parks and open spaces) sites throughout the borough.

Tree1

As of 1 April 2017 trees situated adjacent to the County Council Highway are managed/maintained by Hampshire County Council.
If you are aware of locations on highway verges that you think would benefit from having trees planted, you can apply for Hampshire County Council to consider them.

GBC works to ensure that trees are retained for the benefit and enjoyment of residents and visitors alike whilst enhancing the landscape.  Maintenance is undertaken to reduce any risks to persons and/or property and to abate any nuisance where practical and appropriate.

Tree planting is undertaken over the winter - November through to March. Planting is undertaken with a view to enhancing and improving the environment by selecting trees which are appropriate for their location in terms of size, species and habit.

Tree2

The number of trees planted varies depending on budget availability.

What is a Tree Preservation Order (TPO)?

A Tree Preservation Order (TPO) is a legal document made by the Council to protect individual trees, groups of trees or woodlands.  It controls the type and extent of pruning work that can be done to specific trees.

The TPO comprises of about 10 pages of detailed information explaining how the order works and landowners' rights (the first schedule) which provides a written description of the trees and their location.

You can check whether or not the trees on your property are protected by a TPO by contacting the Planning Department.

Protected Trees

If your enquiry relates to trees which are the subject of a Tree Preservation Order (TPO), or a situated within a Conservation Area, please contact the Borough Planning Office who can advise on the application process for trees subject to TPO's and notification process for trees within a Conservation Area.

Conservation Areas

There are 16 Conservation Areas within the Borough.  The Council exercises additional controls to protect trees within them due to the contribution they make to the character of such areas.

Anyone wishing to carry out works to a tree within a Conservation Area must give the Council six weeks written notice of their intentions.
