Windows

Large expanses of glass are usually out of character and scale in older buildings. They can also be expensive to replace. Glazing bars can be used to subdivide large windows so that they relate to the upper parts of the premises and give the shop more intimacy.

New shopfronts in modern buildings adjoining older buildings should take into account the scale and character of the older buildings. It is not necessary to copy architecture of older buildings, but detailing should be appropriate to the heights, proportions and materials of such buildings. When considering colour schemes, colours on adjoining buildings and the overall character of the area should be taken into account.
