Youth project asks for shoppers' votes

Gosport residents can support summer holiday activities for local youngsters – by voting when they shop at Tesco.

The annual Summer Passport project provides free outdoor fun for secondary-age young people in the first two weeks of August.

It has been shortlisted to get cash from the Tesco Bags of Help scheme, which encourages shoppers to vote for a favourite project using a token they're given at the checkout.

If local shoppers vote for the Summer Passport it could get up to £4,000, which it could use to run dance sessions and a festival-style celebration of the project's first 10 years.

Voting starts on Sunday [7 May] and runs through May and June.

The Summer Passport project is run by Gosport Community Safety Partnership, which includes Gosport Borough Council, Hampshire Constabulary, Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service and local NHS organisations.

Sam Mitchell, Community Engagement Officer from the partnership, said: "We really hope local shoppers will vote for Summer Passport. Local young people have a great time, taking part in a huge range of outdoor activities, at a period when some of them might be tempted to spend their time in less positive ways.

"The project is depends completely on donations and contributions from the community, and the Bags of Help money would make a huge difference."

Bags of Help is funded from the 5p carrier bag levy. Three groups in every Tesco region are shortlisted to receive the funding. The scheme, run with the environmental charity Groundwork, has delivered over £28.5 million to more than 4,000 projects around the UK.

Lindsey Crompton, head of community at Tesco, said: “We are absolutely delighted to open the voting for May and June. There are some fantastic projects on the shortlists and we can’t wait to see them come to life.”
