Join new garden recycling scheme from Monday

Gosport residents can sign up to the borough's new garden recycling scheme from Monday (27 November), and get a new 240-litre wheelie bin for their green waste.

Anyone who signs up by 19 January will get a £5 early-bird discount off membership.

To sign up, go to www.gardenrecyclingscheme.co.uk or call 023 9399 0038 from Monday.

The new service starts on 5 February, with collections every fortnight until October, on the same day as residents' current garden waste pick-ups.

A yearly subscription will cost £60 after 19 January.  Members can pay by instalments, and can share a bin with a neighbour to split the cost. An extra bin costs £40.

Residents will still be able to take garden waste to the household waste and recycling centre free of charge. Anyone with a stock of garden waste sacks, currently used in the borough, can keep using them until 23 March.

The scheme will be run by the council's waste contractor, Urbaser. Instead of the company's drivers touring the borough looking for sacks, they will be able to plan routes that only take in the homes of garden recycling scheme members. This will help save fuel and time, and mean a more environmental service. There will also be no waste plastic from sacks.

The garden waste will be recycled into compost.

Stevyn Ricketts, head of Streetscene at the council, said: "Our new garden recycling scheme will be more convenient for people – instead of having to buy special bags you'll have a wheelie bin handy at home, which can take four times as much as a bag.

"It'll be greener, and will also save council tax payers' money, because it will be more efficient."

The council's usual Christmas tree collection is unchanged.
