New splash park agreed for Lee

Councillors have agreed a site for a new children's splash park on Lee-on-the-Solent seafront.

Gosport Borough Council had earlier set aside £400,000 to build a splash park in Lee. At last night's meeting of its Community Board, councillors agreed it should be in Beach Road car park, by the skate park.

The council plans a similar facility to its popular splash park in Stokes Bay.

If planning permission is granted, the new park could be built during the winter and be ready for the 2019 season.

Cllr Graham Burgess, Chairman of the Community Board, said: "A splash park at Lee would be a great facility for visitors to the seafront and for local people.

"It's a good site, with shelter from the wind and a layout that means parents can keep an eye on their children.

"It would also bring in extra trade for nearby businesses."

The council is proposing to construct a new building with family toilets and changing rooms. It is also planning to use additional funds to create a toilet for seafront visitors with complex needs, in line with national Changing Places standards.

Families would be able to buy ice-creams from a van or from a concession in the new building.

The council is also planning a new building for the National Coastwatch Institution, giving better visibility of the shoreline.

To make up for lost parking bays, the council plans to create an overflow parking area to the south of the site, between Marine Parade East and the Solent Beach Path. To reduce its visual impact, this would be surfaced with a material that allows grass to grow through.
