New busway plan welcomed by Gosport

A new plan for extending the Fareham to Gosport Eclipse busway, which would avoid knocking down Rowner Road Bridge, has been welcomed by Gosport Borough Council.

Hampshire County Council intends to extend the busway to Rowner Road, and originally proposed to demolish the bridge and create a junction instead.

This option could have meant a three-month closure of Rowner Road, and cyclists and pedestrians being exposed to traffic that would previously have used the bridge.

But now a new plan has been agreed by Hampshire's Executive Member for Environment and Transport, Cllr Rob Humby, which would involve keeping the bridge. This would involve much less traffic disruption.

The new plan has been made possible by a decision by the borough council's Economic Development Board this week to hand Hampshire a section of land near the bridge.

Cllr Stephen Philpott, Chairman of the Economic Development Board, is also a Hampshire county councillor.

He said: "The busway is a successful scheme which is helping lots of people get around the area more easily, and an extension would be very welcome.

"Gosport has been working closely with Hampshire, backing this alternative plan. I'm delighted they are now looking at it. Gosport is very happy to help make it happen by providing some land that we own.

"This is great news for people cycling and walking on this route, and for drivers too. This is a good example of our councils working together to find the best way forward."

Hampshire County Council will now submit a new planning application, carry out design work and seek additional funding before seeking further approval from Cllr Humby.
