Lottery gives good causes a £40,000 boost

20 September 2019

Gosport's community lottery has raised nearly £40,000 for local good causes in the year since its first draw.

More than 50 groups in the borough are now benefiting from the lottery, which gives 60p from each £1 ticket to community and voluntary organisations.

As well as the £38,538 raised for local organisations, players have been winning too, with almost £7,500 shared out as prizes.

Out of about 68,000 tickets sold since the lottery launched, 1,383 have won prizes. Although no-one has hit the £25,000 jackpot yet, the £250 prize has been won 14 times.

Around 80% of tickets are bought by Gosport residents, but other players come from as far afield as Horsham and Coventry.

From the ticket price of £1, players can nominate a good cause to get 40p. A further 20p is distributed to other good causes. Another 20p goes to the prize fund and the rest pays running costs.

GVA is believed to be the first community voluntary organisation to run a lottery in the country, and has been advising other areas on how to set up their own schemes.

Local businesses have been supporting the lottery by supplying bonus prizes.

Gosport Community Lottery is run by Gosport Voluntary Action on behalf of Gosport Borough Council, with external lottery management company Gatherwell. An update on its performance was considered by the council's Economic Development Board this week.

Cllr Stephen Philpott, the board's chairman, said: "We're really pleased that the lottery is doing so well, and that so many local groups are receiving a boost to their funds. GVA are doing a great job and more and more people are realising it's a brilliant way of supporting their favourite good cause."

Ian Reeves, chair of GVA, said: “We're thrilled to have been able to launch and grow the Community Lottery and offer local good causes a new way to raise funds with the local community and further afield.”
