Gardeners blossom in competition

9 October 2019

A Gosport care home is blooming with pride after scooping four top prizes in our borough-wide gardening competition.

Langdale Care Home, in The Avenue, was a multiple winner in the Gosport and Lee-on-the-Solent in Bloom awards, run by Gosport Borough Council. The team there picked up trophies for Best Large Back Garden, Best Hanging Basket/Floral Container, Best Retirement/Sheltered Housing and Best Business Initiative.

Another big winner was Shore Leave Haslar, which helps veterans manage health issues through gardening. The project won the overall Mayor's Award and the Best Community and Neighbourhood title, matching their achievement last year.

The Best Newcomer award went to Julie Millard, of Solent Way, Gosport, who won a gold in the large back garden category.

And there was recognition for Sue Doole, who won the Judges' Discretionary Award for her dedicated gardening work at Bedenham Primary School, encouraging children to find out about nature and inspiring them to learn. Her work was recognised by the judges as being especially important for children facing challenges in their lives.

Sue said: "I love doing what I do. It's getting the children outdoors from behind computers, especially the vulnerable ones."

Other winners were:

  • Best Small Back Garden – Ann Rogers of Alver Quay, Gosport
  • Best Front Garden – Douglas Wood of Tebourba Drive, Gosport
  • Best Allotment – Pauline Knight of Olave Close, Lee-On-The-Solent, whose plot is at Lee.

ITV Meridian presenter Fred Dinenage hosted the awards ceremony at Thorngate Halls with Mayor of Gosport Cllr Kathy Jones.

Cllr Jones said: "It’s always a pleasure to attend an event like this, where the local community get involved and invested in making Gosport a more beautiful place.”

Cllr Graham Burgess, Chairman of the council's Community Board, said: "There's so much talent around locally when it comes to creating beautiful gardens and displays. These awards are our way of saying thank you to the hard-working people who help to make our borough look its best."

The competition is sponsored by A&S Motors, Sodexo, Hambrooks, Huhtamaki and Urbaser.
