Helping rough sleepers this winter

Gosport Borough Council staff are working over the current cold snap to make sure rough sleepers are offered the help they need.

The council works with other organisations in the borough to provide services to people at risk of having to sleep on the streets.

Council staff engage with rough sleepers to help them find accommodation and overcome barriers which may prevent them from accessing it. The council and other agencies also carry out regular health and wellbeing checks for rough sleepers and provide information on the help available.

The council provides more beds for rough sleepers during the winter. In periods of extreme cold it offers extra support, with more accommodation available.

The council's housing drop-in service is available at Gosport Town Hall from 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday. Anyone judged to have a priority need can be placed in emergency accommodation.

There are also funds available to help homeless people.

Cllr Mark Hook, Leader of the Council, said: "Our officers are all geared up to help rough sleepers, and the recent very cold weather triggers even more support. We work very closely with the local charity Two Saints and other agencies to try to make sure everyone is offered the shelter and help they need."

For more information residents can see the Gosport Community Safety Partnership site.

Anyone worried about someone rough sleeping can report their concerns via Street Link.

Donations of money, bedding and other items can be made to Two Saints.
