Free events get Gosport feeling festive

Free festive events organised by the council are a great way to kick off the season of celebrations.

On Saturday 25 November it's Gosport's Christmas lights switch-on event, featuring stars from the New Theatre Royal show Beauty and The Beast joining in the switch-on ceremony with Wave 105 breakfast show presenter Rick Jackson and the Mayor of Gosport, Cllr Linda Batty.

The build-up to the switch-on starts in Lawrence Square and the High Street from 9am, with children's rides and a chance to make your own decorations, cards and gifts. Plus there'll be face-painting, locally-made crafts, hot drinks and food.

There's a free drop-in lantern workshop in the Discovery Centre from 12pm to 2pm, with materials provided. Father Christmas will will take over storytime from 11.15am to 11.45am at the Centre.

The powerful beats of the Big Noise Samba Band will open up the stage entertainment at 2.50pm, followed by local choir groups, the Reilly Enterprises Character Show and Dance Pulse. Little Mix tribute act LMX will take the crowd through to the celebrity lights switch-on ceremony and fireworks at 5pm.

Friday 1 December sees the Lee-on-the-Solent High Street lights switch-on. The Mayor will hit the switch at 6.30pm, followed by a carol service around the tree.

Local school choirs will be joined by Gosport Solent Brass. The French market returns to the High Street from 9am until late.

The borough's annual civic carol service is on 17 December at Holy Trinity Church, Trinity Green from 6pm to about 7pm. This traditional service, attended by the Mayor and councillors in formal robes, begins with a procession into church. Everyone will be invited to remain for refreshments. Entry is free.

Ian Bridges, the council's principal project officer for economic prosperity, tourism and culture, said: "The lights switch-on is a great family event, with something for everyone. And it's only the start of the festive season in the borough. There are lots more events and activities coming up, including carols and lots of fun for the whole family."
