Forton Lake bridge closure: change of date

Repair work that will mean closure of the bridge over Forton Lake has been postponed by three weeks.

Gosport Borough Council needs to repair the mechanism that raises the cycle and pedestrian bridge and allows access for boats. The work is now planned to start on 23 April.

The bridge will be closed for about four weeks from that date, but will be temporarily reopened to allow people to use it during the long bank holiday weekend, 4-6 May.

The postponement of the start date is to allow for construction and testing of special equipment, which will enable a safer way of carrying out the repairs. It means the bridge will now be open during the school Easter holiday.

The 170m bridge, built as a millennium project, needs work to replace parts including the chain that holds the 23-tonne counterweight, the motors, the gearboxes and the drive gear. Various control and safety components will also be upgraded.
