Five wins for borough in regional Bloom contest

Gosport borough has picked up a bouquet of awards in this year's South and South-East in Bloom competition, which celebrates communities' efforts to keep their neighbourhoods looking beautiful.

Judges from In Bloom were invited to the area by Gosport Borough Council, and toured around looking for evidence of horticultural achievement, community participation and environmental responsibility.

Awards have now been announced:

  • Gosport and Lee-on-the-Solent together achieved a silver award in the small city category.
  • The Friends of Crescent Garden achieved a gold award in the small park category, adding to the Green Flag the team achieved earlier this year.
  • In Stanley Park the efforts of Alverstoke Women’s Institute were recognised with a silver award.
  • The village of Alverstoke as a whole achieved a silver gilt award. Judges particularly mentioned the Friends of St Mark's Churchyard for their historical knowledge and excellent maintenance.
  • The efforts of volunteers and council countryside officers at Alver Valley Country Park were also rewarded with a silver gilt award.

Cllr Graham Burgess, Chairman of the council's Community Board, said: "These awards show how hard the community works to keep the borough looking good. The efforts of individual residents and community groups are critical to winning an award, and our success this year is a reward for their hard work and dedication to making the borough an attractive place to live, work and visit."

The council also runs the annual Gosport and Lee-on the-Solent in Bloom competition, which encourages everyone, from private garden owners to large commercial premises, to get involved in keeping the borough looking green and attractive. The results of this year's contest will be revealed next month.
