Falklands veteran to speak at charity evening

A Falklands veteran turned author will give a powerful account of his wartime experiences at a charity event next month.

Kevin Porter, then a young tactical radio operator, kept a journal during the conflict and has now written a book about it called Fearless – the Diary of an 18-year-old at War in the Falklands.

It charts his experiences during the war and afterwards, when he struggled to come to terms with what he had been through.

The charity evening is being held by the Mayor of Gosport, Cllr Linda Batty, to raise money for good causes including the brain injury charity Headway, and for equipment at Queen Alexandra Hospital to help sufferers from Crohn's disease and colitis.

Cllr Batty said: "This promises to be a memorable evening, as Kevin has a very moving story to tell, which will strike a chord with many local people. I'm hoping we will be able to make a difference to some local charities that really need our support."

The event is on Thursday 14 December in the council chamber at Gosport Town Hall at 6.30pm. Tickets are £5, which includes canapes kindly sponsored by Waitrose, Gosport. Entrance will be via the door opposite the Discovery Centre from 5.45pm.

Tickets are available from the Mayor’s PA on 023 9254 5202.
