Cash for youth groups

Three local youth groups are celebrating after young people voted for them to get a share of a special fund.

At the YOUdecide Decision Day at St Vincent College, young people voted on how to allocate £5,000 from the fund.

Momentum Youth Club won £2,000 for music equipment, games, leader training and furniture.  Gosport LGBT+ Youth Group won £2,217 for one-to-one support sessions, and Panjazz International won £783 for a music-making project.
The cash is from the YOUdecide fund, set up by the Gosport Community Safety Partnership, which includes Gosport Borough Council, Hampshire Constabulary, Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service and local NHS organisations.

It's aimed at projects that improve the lives of local young people or make their neighbourhoods safer and better places to live in.

To qualify, projects needed to be targeted at 11 to 19 year-olds, or young people up to 25 if they had a disability or were care leavers.

The Decision Day audience comprised solely of young people for the first time in the history of the scheme. They heard three-minute pitches from seven groups applying for funds before debating their merits and then voting.

The decision day event is designed to make sure services are meeting the needs of young people by engaging them in the decision-making process. It also gives them experience of involvement in democracy and local decision-making, which could inspire them in adult life.
