BMX track improvements under way

Work to upgrade Gosport's BMX track gets under way this week, to help make it a national centre for the sport.

The £300,000 project, due to last about six weeks, involves constructing a new pump track to support the training of new riders, extending and reshaping the track, building a larger starting hill and adding an electronic starting gate.

It's part of Gosport Borough Council's overall Alver Valley eastern gateway project, which includes a new car park and upgraded cycle routes.

Cllr Graham Burgess, Chairman of the council’s Community Board, said: “BMX is very popular, and this work will transform what's on offer to riders in the borough. The track improvements will encourage people, especially young people, to get out in the fresh air and exercise, and the new features will also help riders develop their skills and become serious participants in the sport."

A small informal parking area off Grange Road, near the BMX track, will close this week when the site compound is set up. It will not reopen, but drivers will be able to use the new Alver Valley car park.

The project has been helped by £150,000 of Sport England funding.
