Awards for green-fingered pupils

Budding gardeners at Gomer Junior School have won the top award in Gosport Borough Council's annual Schools in Bloom competition.

The school was named best overall, for gathering the highest scores across all categories.

The competition judges said: “They were excellent in their use of recycled materials, with an outstanding display of planting throughout all categories – a fantastic use of the learning environment.

“The children were very knowledgeable about all aspects of gardening.”

Ten schools took part in the competition, attending Gosport Town Hall yesterday [Thu 5 July] to receive awards from TV presenter Fred Dinenage.

In many categories there were joint winners because schools accumulated the same number of points in the judging process.

The Mayor of Gosport, Cllr Diane Furlong, said: "I have a great love of gardening and it is encouraging to see the children of Gosport learning about how to grow plants, both flowers and vegetables, and enjoying the results of their efforts.

"Standards were high this year, and I hope that our schoolchildren will continue to build on their gardening skills and enjoy being outdoors and that it may give them a lifelong appreciation of gardening, and perhaps even, one day, a career opportunity."

Schools taking part were: Alverstoke Infant School, Bedenham Primary School, Alverbridge Nursery,  Grange Infant School, Gomer Junior School,  Leesland C of E Infant School, Leesland C of E Junior School, Newtown C of E Primary School, St John's C of E Primary School and Brune Park Community School.

Alverbridge Nursery won an outstanding achievement award. They moved to a new location last December and the judges felt they had worked hard to produce a lovely outside space, introducing play and humour into their planting.

Also catching the judges' eye were the Prince Harry and Meghan scarecrows created by Bedenham Infant School, using marigolds for Harry's hair.

Competition sponsors were A & S Motors, Hambrooks, Sodexo, Huhtamaki and Urbaser.
