Awards for budding gardeners

Green-fingered pupils at Alverstoke Infant School have won the top award in our annual Schools in Bloom competition.

The school was named the best overall, for gathering the highest scores across all categories.

Eleven schools took part in the competition, attending Gosport Town Hall to receive awards from TV presenter Fred Dinenage.

The Mayor of Gosport, Cllr Linda Batty, said: "All of the children taking part worked very hard and deserved their awards."

Judges praised all the children for their outstanding efforts in providing habitats for wildlife, maintaining productive vegetable gardens and producing sensory and quiet gardens. In some cases pupils had overcome difficulties with weather, ground conditions, badgers and foxes, but had not lost heart.

The judges commented: "It’s wonderful to see that children are enjoying the fruits of their labour, literally growing and eating their produce. The standard of gardening has been very high this year, giving us plenty to deliberate on."

The council's landscape contractor, Sodexo Horticultural Services, sponsors the competition. Director James Lloyd said: "It's nice to see children actively involved in gardening and understanding that fruit and vegetables don't come in wrappers from supermarkets."

Schools taking part were: Alverstoke C of E Junior School, Alverstoke Infant School, Bedenham Primary School, Elson Junior School, Gateway Brockhurst Pre-school, Gomer Junior School, Haselworth Primary School, Leesland C of E Infant School, Leesland C of E Junior School, Newtown C of E Primary School and St John's C of E Primary School.
