Award for council's support for armed forces

30 August 2019

Gosport Borough Council's support for the local armed forces community has been recognised by an award from the Ministry of Defence.

The council has won a silver award under the ministry's Employer Recognition Scheme, which highlights organisations that demonstrate exceptional support to military personnel, veterans, reservists, cadets and forces families.

Employers also need to have signed up to the Armed Forces Covenant – a promise that those who serve or have served in the British military, and their families, are not disadvantaged by their service.

Cllr Marcus Murphy, the council's Armed Forces Champion and a former member of the armed forces, said: "The council is very proud of the borough’s rich military history, stretching back over 800 years. We very much value our armed forces community, which totals 13% of our population, and wish to support them.

"It's fabulous news that we've got this award. The achievement is wholly down to the hard work of council staff.

"The award shows that we are serious in our commitment to supporting our local armed forces, our veterans and their families and my congratulations go to all those involved."

The council's support for the armed forces community includes:

  • extra leave for reservists so they can attend training
  • flexible working for staff whose partners are in the forces, and for cadet force adult volunteers
  • an armed forces staff forum which meets to tackle relevant issues
  • a system to make sure jobs are advertised to service leavers
  • help for members of the armed forces community to apply for jobs and get training
  • training for local professionals to improve mental health support for service personnel and their families
  • backing for Armed Forces Day, including funding, staff time and promotion
  • close working with key organisations such as the First Light Trust, Alabaré’s Homes for Veterans, the Naval Families Federation and HMS Sultan

Commenting on the announcement of the 2019 Employer Recognition Scheme silver awards, Defence Secretary Ben Wallace said: "These awards recognise the outstanding support for our armed forces from employers across Britain and I would like to thank and congratulate each and every one.

"Regardless of size, location or sector, employing ex-forces personnel is good for business and this year we have doubled the number of awards in recognition of the fantastic support they give."

Minister for Defence People and Veterans Johnny Mercer said: "Veterans make a huge contribution to businesses across the country and it’s fantastic to see a record-breaking number of organisations recognised for their support.

"We’re working closely with businesses to help them further understand the huge value that veterans, reservists and military spouses can bring to their organisation."
