Council awards first shopfront grants

16 June 2021 - Two Gosport shop owners are celebrating after becoming the first to be awarded grants to help them improve their historic shopfronts and restore the character of the town centre.

Gosport high street awarded £100,000 for cultural programme

19 May 2021 - A partnership of organisations from across Gosport has been awarded a £100,000 grant from Historic England as part of the High Streets Heritage Action Zone (HSHAZ). Gosport Cultural Consortium will create and deliver a programme of community-led cultural activities on the high street over the next three years.

Saturday 8 May - The results of the Gosport Borough Council elections on Thursday 6 May have been announced following a count at Gosport Leisure Centre today.

Council condemns graveyard vandals

8 March 2021 - The council has strongly condemned the damage caused by vandals to eight gravestones at Ann's Hill Cemetery and has begun work to repair and restore the gravestones. The gravestones were damaged by spray paint on Friday 5 March. The council is now working with a local stonemason to professionally clean the stonework and make sure there is no lasting damage. Where possible, relatives of the deceased are also being contacted by the council so that the families concerned can be kept informed on the restoration work.

Boosting local businesses

1 February 2021 - The council has launched a Go Local campaign to help support the local economy during national lockdown and in the future, once tier restrictions are eased. It aims to help businesses remain operational and encourage people to 'think local, act local and buy local'. The council hopes residents will consider independent retailers and show their support by shopping locally (online) where they can.

Alverstoke coastal defence plan up for approval

02 September 2020 - A project to build new sea defences has taken a step forward now that the planning application for the Alverstoke Coastal Scheme has been submitted for approval. The scheme, which would ensure reduced flood risk to 142 properties, is being developed by the Eastern Solent Coastal Partnership (ESCP), with support from professional consultants, on behalf of the council.

Gold award highlights council's support for armed forces

31 July 2020 - The council's support for the local armed forces community has been recognised by a top award from the Ministry of Defence. The council has won a gold award under the ministry's Employer Recognition Scheme, which highlights organisations that demonstrate exceptional support to military personnel, veterans, reservists, cadets and forces families.

31 July 2020 - Sophie, eight, saves up pocket money for presents for people in emergency pandemic accommodation, as councillors agree to keep the accommodation open for the foreseeable future.

Leisure centre to reopen on Monday

29 July 2020 - Gosport Leisure Centre is to reopen on 3 August, the operator has announced. The centre, run by Places Leisure on behalf of Gosport Borough Council, has been closed to comply with national coronavirus safety rules. Following the government's decision to allow indoor gyms and leisure facilities to reopen, it is preparing to open its doors again.

Tourist information centre reopens

24 July 2020 - Gosport's tourist information centre is open again, offering a range of services to local people as well as visitors. As well as providing tourists with information on the borough's attractions, staff can also help residents with information on activities in the area. They are also booking agents for National Express coach tickets, local theatres and other attractions. The centre also has a good selection of gift ideas and local history publications.

Key workers get free bike check-ups

26 June 2020 - Gosport Community Safety Partnership funded four weekly 'bike doctor' sessions at Bicycle Recycling at Gosport bus station, with the final one on Tuesday 30 June from 10am to 4pm.

Heritage funding to help historic town centre recover from pandemic

18 June - Government funding of £1.78 million is set to bring new life to Gosport High Street and Stoke Road, bringing major investment into the town and helping it bounce back from the coronavirus crisis. The council and Hampshire Cultural Trust have been developing an ambitious plan to regenerate the historic town centre for some time. The work was under way long before the pandemic hit. Now funding for the plan has been confirmed, and it will be a major plank of Gosport's economic recovery from the virus outbreak.
