22 winners in first community lottery draw

The first draw of Gosport Community Lottery saw 22 lucky winners share prizes worth a total of £500, organisers have announced.

One anonymous winner matched four numbers and scooped £250. Two players won £25, 16 won three free lottery tickets, and three won Amazon Fire tablets.

Tablet winner Ray Charman said: "I'm really pleased to have been one of the first winners.  I think this is a really good way to raise money for local charities and I hope the lottery will be a great success."

Tickets cost just £1 each and 60% goes to local good causes. Players can nominate a good cause to support.

Ray supported Loud and Proud, a local volunteering group for young people. He was presented with his prize at Gosport's Diving Museum, another organisation that benefits from the lottery.

Museum director Kevin Casey said: “We're really pleased to be part of the Gosport Community Lottery. We wish it the greatest success and hope the community realise what a great benefit it is to Gosport."

Another tablet winner, Louisa Dale, who supported Harbour Cancer Support, said: "I’m delighted to have won and it’s great that money goes directly to local good causes."

Kathy Preece, who volunteers at Age Concern Gosport, won three free lottery tickets. She said: "Age Concern Gosport are set to raise £500 annually from the lottery, which is a significant amount for us. The more people that support us through the lottery, the more local older – and often vulnerable – people we can help."

So far 34 local good causes stand to benefit from the lottery. A total of 1,137 tickets have been sold, putting it on track to generate £35,000 for local groups per year.

Gosport Voluntary Action is running the lottery on behalf of Gosport Borough Council, with external lottery management company Gatherwell.
