Gosport Mayoralty

Since the incorporation of the new Borough Council on 1 April 1974 there has been 29 Mayors in the Borough, the majority of whom have served a one year term.

The Mayor is the Civic Head of the Borough who, under the present Constitution, is elected annually (normally in May) at a meeting held in the Ballroom at Thorngate Halls to which all members of the public are entitled to attend.  The Mayor is chosen on a rotational basis between the political groups on the Council subject to them not having previously held office as Mayor or Deputy Mayor and to them having completed a four year period of service on the Council.

The Mayor represents the Borough at various functions throughout the year at the request of local organisations such as presentations, receptions and visits. The Mayor also leads any formal Civic events held in the Borough ie Freedom Parades, Civic Sunday, Remembrance Sunday.

Each year the Mayor selects a number of charities and works during the year to raise funds to support these charities.  Donations are received from organisations and individuals in the Borough and all monies are distributed between the chosen charities.
