Background information

Gosport Waterfront & Town Centre Coastal Community Team was established in November 2015 following a successful application by the council to the Department for Communities & Local Government (DCLG).

Coastal Community Teams enable local communities to come together and develop a common vision and plans for their area.  They  bring together local authorities, organisations and businesses with an interest in the issues and opportunities of a defined coastal area, and who have a willingness and ability to develop an effective forward strategy for that area.

Gosport Watefront and Town Centre Coastal Community Team

The area of focus for the Gosport Waterfront and Town Centre Coastal Community Team extends to 130 hectares and includes a significant frontage along Portsmouth Harbour (between Royal Clarence Yard and Haslar Marina).  Within this area there are a number of waterfront development sites, three marinas, residential neighbourhoods, the Town Centre and main public transport interchange, together with a number of important civic, cultural and community buildings.

The Team’s core members are drawn from:

  • Eastern Solent Coastal Partnership
  • Gosport Borough Council
  • Gosport Town Centre Business Partnership
  • Gosport Marine Scene CiC
  • Gosport Voluntary Action
  • Hampshire County Council
  • Hampshire Cultural Trust
  • Tourism South East
  • Businesses from the Waterfront and Town Centre area

See the Terms of Reference for more details about the Team.

Its work will address community needs, make use of assets and take advantage of opportunities based upon four connected key themes:

  • Social, community development and skills
  • Coastal environment and urban heritage
  • Business growth and jobs
  • Inward investment and land use

Gosport Waterfront and Town Centre Economic Plan

A key Government requirement for Coastal Community Teams was to produce and publish an Economic Plan for their area by the end of January 2016.  The Plan had to contain information on the needs of the area, particularly with respect to the local economy, and detail priorities and actions that the Team agree should be taken forward to address identified challenges.

In addition to priorities and actions, the Plan had to demonstrate how these will be taken forward, including possible sources of funding or the further work needed to develop solutions.  It is a living document and as such will be subject to regular reviews and updates in light of changing circumstances and opportunities.

Gosport's Plan was developed from desktop research into existing related consultations, studies and strategies, 1-2-1 stakeholder interviews and a series of four workshops based upon the above key themes. These workshops were attended by local residents and business people, plus representatives from public bodies and community organisations.

Minutes of Meetings

Minutes of meetings of the Gosport Coastal Community Team will be published here once formally approved by the Chairman at the following meeting:
