What can I recycle?

Recyclable items that can be collected through the kerbside scheme are identified below. For information on recycling banks please click here, or for the garden waste recycling service, please click here. For information on home composting please click here.

Your recycling should be placed in the green lidded wheeled bin or clear sack for collection, by 7am on your collection day. Please do not wrap or bag the items - just place them in loose, directly into the bin or sack. Please rinse out all cans and plastic bottles.

Recycling - Yes please:

  • Paper - e.g. newspapers and magazines, envelopes, junk mail and scrap paper, directories, brochures and catalogues - including Yellow Pages.

  • Plastic bottles (any type i.e. drinks / shampoo / detergent - no lids please)

  • Food tins and drinks cans

  • Aerosol cans e.g. air freshener, deodorant. Please do not include aerosol cans with a hazard symbol (an orange and black skull and crossbones) e.g. oven cleaner.

  • Card - e.g. greeting cards, card packaging, cardboard boxes

No thanks:

The following items are not collected through the kerbside recycling scheme and should be placed in the black household waste bin or taken to a local recycling bank if possible.

  • General rubbish

  • Aluminium Foil (unfortunately GBC is not aware of anywhere in Gosport to take this material for recycling. Aluminium foil can be taken to Friends of the Earth in Fareham for recycling - the collection bank is at Palmerston Avenue car park. Alternatively there is a collection bank at the Sainsbury's superstore in Hedge End).

  • Clothes, shoes and household textiles- these should be taken to a local recycling bank if possible - there are plenty of these in Gosport - click here for details.

  • Drinks cartons (e.g. Tetra Pak)

  • Flower pots

  • Glass - bottles and jars should be taken to a local recycling bank if possible - click here for details.

  • Plastic packaging (i.e. yoghurt pots / margarine tubs / food trays)

  • Polystyrene

  • Shredded Paper - this causes problems at the sorting facility but can be composted or placed in a paper bank

  • Gift wrap - this causes problems at the sorting facility - please use this again if possible, then place in your black household waste bin.
