Garden Waste Collection

Garden waste collections are changing

From 5 February 2018, collections using paid-for plastic sacks will be replaced by a new subscription service which gives residents who sign up a new 240-litre wheelie bin. The service will cost £60 per year, but if you sign up before 19 January 2018 you will receive a £5 early bird discount.

Please visit www.gardenrecyclingscheme.co.uk from 27 November 2017 for further details or to sign up.

The information below remains accurate until the new service starts on 5 February. There will be a transfer period until 23 March 2018 when garden waste sacks which have already been purchased can still be used. After this date, only residents with a garden recycling scheme subscription will receive garden waste collections.

About the service:

To meet the needs of local residents, the Council can collect and dispose of green sacks containing garden waste including:-

  • Grass cuttings
  • Shrub cuttings
  • Leaf fall
  • Exhausted bedding plants; and
  • Unwanted weed growth.

Garden waste collected is used for composting purposes and not disposed of along with your domestic waste. Composting tonnages contribute towards Gosport's overall recycling rate - for this reason green garden sacks which contain black sacks, are too heavy to lift or contain any other item not listed above, will not be collected. Please do not include food waste or soil. The weight limit for your green sack is 13kg - this equates to approximately half a sack of potatoes.

The Council introduced a chargeable kerbside garden waste collection service during 1992 in order to help those residents who are unable to transport green waste to the household waste recycling centre.  Under The Waste (England and Wales)(Amendment) Regulations 2012, garden waste is classified as a type of waste for which a charge may be made. This charge covers the cost of the sack, as well as the cost of its collection, and enables the Council to run the service.

Once filled the sack must be made visible and available at the front of the property on the nominated collection day, by 7.00am. Simply locate your home on the map below then check the index for the appropriate collection day.
