Air Quality

Air Quality Leaflet

NHS Hampshire has published a leaflet on the subject of poor local air quality. It lets you know how you can help reduce local air pollution by thinking about more sustainable forms of transport such as walking, cycling, taking public transport or car sharing. If you would like a copy please contact ehs@gosport.gov.uk.

General information

We regularly monitor levels of the air pollutant nitrogen dioxide which is emitted from vehicles and can affect human health.

Air quality review and assessment

The Environment Act 1995 gives us some statutory duties to manage local air quality. This includes carrying out regular reviews and assessments such as monitoring work on busy roads and junctions for emissions of nitrogen dioxide and particulates from vehicle exhausts. Where pollution levels exceed our air quality strategy objective levels, we designate air quality management areas (AQMAs) to tackle it.

Air quality management areas (AQMAs)

The Borough does not have any air quality management areas.

Air quality review and assessment reports

Part IV of the Environment Act 1995 places a statutory duty on local authorities to review and assess local air quality. In keeping with this, we have submitted detailed historical air quality information reports to Defra since 1999. Recent air quality reports for the Council include:- Updating and Screening Assessment 2012; Progress Report 2013; Progress Report 2014. Since 2015, Gosport and Fareham Borough Councils, have submitted joint annual air quality reports to the Government.
