Health and Wellbeing

Gosport Borough Council works with partner organisations to deliver action at a local level to improve health outcomes for people living in the Borough. Organisations in Gosport have a strong culture of working together and this has been built upon in developing a collaborative approach to improve health and wellbeing for local people.

To do this, the Council has set up the Gosport Health and Wellbeing Partnership (GHWBP) which has a Shared Priorities Plan and delivers activity which adds value to the existing work of local organisations.  The GHWBP includes representatives from partner organisations with an interest or influence in the health and wellbeing of the local population.  This group has examined the evidence-base and identified the health priorities which need to be addressed.

The priority themes for improving health outcomes include;
  • Healthy lifestyles and resilient communities - encouraging healthier lifestyles including eating well and being more physically active.  Creating opportunities to build resilience to help people cope in everyday life and in times of difficulty.
  • Health inequalities and determinants of health - addressing wider social determinants that influence health status and wellbeing, specifically employment, housing and social connections, which contribute to and compound inequalities in health.

The Council's role within the Partnership is to co-ordinate meetings and work activity; support delivery of projects or initiatives; and monitor progress of local activity against the Shared Priorities Plan. This support and involvement also ensures that there is direct input to the prioritisation and commissioning of services in Gosport.

The Partnership priorities are shaped by local evidence of health set out within the Joint Strategic Needs Assessment (JSNA) and Health Profile for Gosport. Hampshire County Council’s Public Health Department has a responsibility for public health services, and to implement a Health and Wellbeing Board who agree ways to improve local health and wellbeing. The Hampshire Joint Health and Wellbeing Strategy sets out the context for local area partnerships and the shared priorities plan for the Gosport Health and Wellbeing Partnership is aligned with the County strategy.

Queries about the work of the Gosport Health and Wellbeing Partnership should be forwarded to Donna Simpson, Health & Wellbeing Partnerships Officer on 023 9254 5421 or via email.
