12 new chargers to help Gosport go electric
A dozen new electric vehicle charge points are coming to council car parks.
Members of the council's Community Board last night gave the go-ahead for the new charge points, which will be a mix of rapid and slower types.
Likely sites for the new chargers are Walpole Park, Green Lane, Pebble Beach and Number 2 Battery West car parks in Gosport, and Beach Road and Marine Parade car parks in Lee-on-the-Solent. The council already has two chargers at Walpole Park car park.
Cllr Philip Raffaelli, who chairs the Community Board, said: "Electric vehicles are becoming more and more popular and the council needs to encourage this by providing the right facilities. This is an important step in helping residents do their bit to reduce the borough's carbon footprint."
The council hopes to have the charge points in place by late summer. They will be installed in pairs and drivers will be charged to use them.
The council's climate change strategy sets a goal of encouraging residents and businesses to reduce their carbon footprint. As well as helping local electric car drivers, the council plans to introduce numerous electric vehicles to its fleet over the next few years.
Around 18 other public chargers exist in the borough, run privately at sites like petrol stations and supermarkets.
