Tree dressing day is steeped in age-old traditions from across the world. It is held throughout the country on the first weekend in December and typical beliefs were that the decorated tree symbolizes the life force that persists even in the dead months of the year.
Gosport Borough Council’s Countryside Section will be celebrating trees by holding their own Festival of Tree Dressing on Sunday 2 December, at Grange Farm, Rowner. The event will start at 2.30pm and finish at 4.30pm.
“After the summer sun and rain, the trees of Gosport have again put on an excellent autumn display for us to enjoy,” said Fred Gibson, Countryside Officer for the Council. “But as winter fast approaches and the trees shed their leaves, it is over to evergreens such as the holly and the ivy to add some colour to our countryside. If you’d like to experience a little magic of the trees then we would love for you to come along and join us at Gosport’s very special event.”
As well as a children’s workshops, information on tree dressing and a special festive show by ‘Ticklish Allsorts’, there will also be the decorating of a tree with what ever the imagination can conjure up. To crown the day there will be a candle light procession making the area magical and a wonderful reminder of Christmas.
The event is free but the children’s workshop will attract a small entrance fee to cover the cost of materials. So in this winter solstice, take a day off from battling around crowded shops and join us in the woods of Gosport for an afternoon of creative and arboreal fun!
