Youngsters Are the Kings & Queens of Clean

Yesterday 90 children from Lee on the Solent Infant School took advantage of the dry sunny weather to take part in a clean up in a rather wet and muddy Recreation Ground.

The clean up, organised by Gosport Borough Council’s Streetscene team, was arranged in answer to the youngsters request for extra litter bins to be provided to encourage more people to dispose of their litter considerately.

Now, thanks to their enthusiasm extra bins are being provided and the Council’s Green Team and Clean Team turned out to help clear up the local park.

“The children were great and worked really hard in cleaning up the Lee Recreation Ground, Said Stevyn Ricketts Head of Streetscene. “Some of the parents came along to join the children who worked alongside a couple of our Enforcement Officers. They were joined by our Green Team who managed to tidy up some of the scrub areas of the park, and the Clean Team who got into the more difficult to access areas to remove rubbish.”

“Between them they collected 43.2Kg of rubbish, of which around 17.2Kg or 40% was recyclable. If you were to multiply this for all the park areas in the Borough, it would be a pretty substantial amount of rubbish and recycling.

The simple fact is if the people who regularly drop this sort of litter were to take it home and bin it in their household and recycling bin then firstly, our environment would be a much nicer, cleaner place in which to live, but it would also boost our recycling which also helps the environment.”

The clean up was so successful that Streetscene hopes to run this sort of programme out around the Borough to encourage other young people on the benefits of not dropping rubbish and of recycling.
