More than 90 schoolchildren from Leesland Infant School will today, visit the Town Hall at Gosport to find out a bit more about the role of a Councillor.
To ensure everyone has a chance take part and enjoy the experience the children have been broken down into two groups, one that will visit the Town Hall at 9.45am this morning and the second at 1pm this afternoon.
On arrival each group of children will be met by the Mayor Councillor June Cully and her Head Town Hall Keeper/ Mace Bearer and Chauffeur John Green. The youngsters will then be invited to go to the Chamber where they will get the chance to don their robes as Councillors for a Council Meeting.
Some will also get the chance to dress up as the Chief Executive with robes and wig, Mayor and Mayoress (complete with hat), Town Crier, Mace Bearer, Honorary Alderman, Chauffeur etc to process around the Council offices and back to the Council Chamber.
Here they get the chance to find out about the origins of the Borough Crest and answer questions to win a Civic Mug. Once they have answered the questions and disrobed, the youngsters will then get to enjoy some much needed refreshments with the Mayor before making their way back to school.
“We have been organising these visits for several years now and they have become a firm favourite with the schools, as John makes it so interesting for the children,” said the Mayor Councillor June Cully.
“If it helps spark just a glimmer of interest in the role of the authority and Councillors, then perhaps we can look forward to a whole entry of younger, keener politicians in years to come.”
