Gosport Borough Councils Enforcement Team has just taken delivery of four new bikes which will allow them to get out and about and go off road in their fight against fly tipping, dog fouling, graffiti and other anti-social offences.
The bikes, two of which will be based at the Wilmott Lane depot and two at Lee on the Solent, will enable members of the Enforcement Team, to be able to cover difficult areas much more quickly, easily and discreetly, with hopefully excellent results.
“Areas like the Wildgrounds, Alver Valley, cycle paths and back alleyways are some of the most frequently fly tipped places as they are often quiet with no-one around, making them an easy target,” said Stevyn Ricketts, Head of Streetscene.
“But these places are not easily accessible by motorised vehicles and by the time the officer has parked up and walked to check an area, the offence can be committed and the offender long gone. The bikes however will make it so much easier and, because they are not as noticeable as a marked van and can approach quickly and quietly, we will hopefully be able to catch and prosecute more offenders.”
The bikes come complete with chains, locks, stands, safety gear and, because the Enforcement Team has extended their working hours, all important lights!
“That means we can patrol and catch not just fly tippers but those carrying out graffiti or even people walking their dogs late at night who let them foul the pathways,” added Stevyn. “These bikes are a new and important tool in our campaign to fight anti-social behaviour. We want to stamp it out to make Gosport a cleaner and better place to live.”
The Enforcement Team will also be partnering the Police Community Safety Officers (PCSO’s) on their beat to find out and target problem hotspots in the area.
