Gosport Borough Council is working to provide a wide range of good quality, inclusive, safe and accessible play, leisure and youth activities, for children and young people in the Borough to enjoy, both indoors and out!
To ensure this is achieved the Council has recently adopted a Play Strategy, its purpose being to help the Council establish a clear framework and way forward for future work.
“The strategy has been developed through wide consultation and partnership working,” said Pam Conway, Leisure Development Officer for the Council. “The participation of children and young people has been fundamental in its development, and they will continue to be an essential part of us achieving the key objectives.”
An Action Plan outlines what needs to be done and already a play partnership group has been developed. Its members are made up of young people, residents, groups and organisations which may be in a position to help develop projects.
Some members are currently putting project proposals together to seek funding and, the first application will be submitted to the Big Lottery in September this year. They have already indicated an allocation of £200,000 which, if successful, means projects can start in 2008.
Details of the Play Strategy can be found on the Council’s website at
Feedback from young people is welcomed via the Gosport Youth Council web site at

We welcome interested people to join the Play Partnership group, which will meet four times a year to monitor progress. Sub-groups will meet in addition to this to develop the required actions.
The Play Strategy is also being promoted through the Library Service at the Discovery Centre, Gosport from 14 July to 8 September.
