Is driving the pleasure it should be, or do traffic delays result in the loss of work time, causing you stress, which together with the pollution emitted from your vehicle results in the health and well-being being of you and your family being compromised?
Well, as part of its continuing policy of improving the area in which we live, Gosport’s Environmental Health Services, Environmental Pollution Control Team will be conducting FREE health checks on cars.
From Monday 23 to Friday 27 July, the testing team will be in Halfords Car Park, Gosport, where from 9.30am to 5.30pm they will carry out FREE emission checks on any petrol or diesel car presented, to make sure it is doing as little damage to the environment as possible! Owners will be given a print out showing the emissions registered from their vehicle. If they are high they can then make arrangements with their local garage to rectify the problem.
“We have been running similar tests since 1997 and have had quite a good take up over the years,” said Vic Evershed, Pollution Officer for Gosport Borough Council’s Environmental Health Services. “The thing is this sort of problem can’t be spotted just by looking at or driving your car, it isn’t visibly obvious by smoke billowing out of the exhaust or by a sluggish response. The only way to find out the true state of your car is by having the test.”
In fact many drivers have been greatly surprised when they receive a high reading. Some have brought their car along for the test purely out of curiosity, never expecting there to be a problem.
“We don’t mind that in fact we would sooner someone come along have the test and find out there’s a problem so they can sort it out,” added Vic. “We do not report anyone if the emission reading is high. It’s down to the individual as to whether they have their car looked at, but we would like to think that if the problem were pointed out, they would act responsibly and get it fixed. We all have a duty to reduce our exhaust emissions for our health, and to avoid long term damage to the environment.”
Sadly the number of people suffering with bronchial and asthmatic problems continues to rise. We should all do our bit to help reduce that by making sure our vehicle is clean and not polluting the atmosphere.
Five minutes – that’s all it takes for a FREE EMISSION CHECK!
