Recycling Scheme Run Out to Flats

The Government has set Gosport Borough Council a target of a 27% recycling rate – something it hopes to achieve with the help of its residents.

To attain those figures the Council is currently planning to extend its already successful alternate weekly recycling collection to include flats previously excluded from the scheme.

“Unlike introducing kerbside recycling to houses, where you just deliver an extra bin per household for recyclables, with some flats this has proved impractical,” said Councillor Dennis Wright, Chairman of the Community & Environment Board. “In many flats people have to share a communal refuse bin and do not have the luxury of space for their own recycling bin. For that reason it was important that we met with residents and discussed individual needs of the block and sort out the practicalities of introducing recycling, not just rush it through.”

The first phase of the new flats recycling scheme is to be the ‘Harbour Gate’ estate at Hardway, Gosport.  Here many residents already have their own household waste bin and space has been found to accommodate their new recycling bins.

However, in other blocks, residents currently sharing a communal refuse bin will receive an extra communal bin for recycling. Every household will also receive an information pack and,n the council is also looking to provide householders with a FREE bag in which to store their recycling, making trips to the large shared bin easier.

Residents can recycle exactly the same materials as other households in Gosport: - paper, card, plastic bottles, food tins and drinks cans (no yoghurt pots, butter containers, milk or juice cartons or glass).

“Our aim is for everyone in Gosport to be able to recycle from home and, to this end, two dedicated Recycling Inspectors are currently preparing proposals to provide recycling facilities to all flats not yet served by the kerbside recycling scheme,” added Councillor Wright.

Residents not currently on a collection route need not worry as they will be informed by letter prior to the commencement of a new recycling collection starting in their area. However, with a large number of flats in Gosport to include on the scheme this will take time.  We would ask that you please be patient!
