Local school children, living in Lee on the Solent, recently contacted their local Ward Councillor to complain about the lack of rubbish bins in the area and subsequently the amount of rubbish left lying around.
Their keenness to improve their neighbourhood has resulted in not just a spring clean of the local recreation ground, but the chance to choose the sites for new extra bins proposed for the area.
On Tuesday 6 March at 10am, Ward Councillors Graham Burgess and Derek Kimber will join youngsters from Lee on the Solent Infant School at Lee Recreation Ground for a litter pick. Elaine Johnson from Lee Infants School will be persuading parents to come along and take part and, together with Gosport Borough Council’s Clean Team, they will, armed with litter pickers, bags, bibs and gloves, attack the recreation ground giving it a thorough ‘Deep Clean’.
Once the area has been tidied and the litter removed the children will get the chance to give their views on where the proposed extra litter bins would be best placed.
“It is great to see young people with such a keen interest in keeping the environment clean and tidy and it is something we would always wish to
encourage,” said Stevyn Ricketts, Head of Streetscene, the Council department responsible for cleaning up litter and removing rubbish.
“This is the first area in Lee to receive the ‘Deep Clean’ treatment, but happily not the last as more are planned for other areas at a later date.”
