The Mayor of Gosport, Councillor Keith Gill presented prizes to the winners of this year’s annual ‘Recycled Boat Race’, an event hosted by the Gosport Model Yacht & Boating Club at their Walpole Park Lake, Gosport.
The boats, made from recyclable material, were all designed and built by youngsters attending the Gosport Borough Council, Summer Playschemes.
“The sun shone brightly for the race and with a fresh breeze blowing the boats did terrifically well,” said the Mayor Councillor Keith Gill. “The atmosphere was wonderful, with all the competitors taking a great pride in their boat. Their enthusiasm was a joy to see and I would like to thank them all for taking part.”
Members of the Gosport Model Yacht & Boating Club organised and judged the race, which has become a regular event on their sailing calendar. They used to run their own Paper Boat race in years gone by. But in recent years, the race has developed into the recycled boat race, an event specially organised for the youngsters taking part in the Council’s summer playschemes.
More than 30 yachts took part in the race and 1st place went to David & James Aylott - Nickerson of the Gosport Park, Rugby Clubhouse/Leesland Junior School Playscheme.
Joint 2nd winners were Georgia & Shannon McMahon from Grange Farm Playscheme and, Sky West also from Grange Farm Playscheme.
Winners received different books on knots courtesy of the Gosport Model Yacht & Boating Club plus a goodie bag provided by the Council’s Leisure Development Team.
