Over holiday periods, we often see an increase in the amount of waste we produce - Easter cards, Easter egg boxes, additional waste from entertaining family and friends, not to mention waste from all those DIY jobs and garden makeovers!
So why not, when you next go shopping, think carefully about what you buy, and how best to dispose of any excess waste. If you really want to help the environment, and reduce the amount of waste created over Easter, look out for chocolate eggs that are wrapped in less packaging - some now come with just one layer of foil.
“Better still make your own chocolate eggs, Said Jenny Marlow, Recycling Officer for Gosport Borough Council. “Moulds are widely available and can be used year after year. Making and decorating eggs can be fun for all ages and everyone loves to receive a personalised gift.”
“if you do receive a shop bought Easter egg, please remember to dispose of the packaging carefully. Once the chocolate has gone, detach the cardboard box from any foil or plastic packaging used and place it in your green recycling bin. Then place the foil and plastic in your household waste black bin.”
Easter cards too are a recycling bonus as, after bringing you a lovely message, they can easily be recycled in your green recycling bin.
And if spring has spurred you on to a seasonal clear out then why not take advantage of Gosport’s Household Waste Recycling Centre at Grange Road. Here you can leave everything from furniture and clothes to car batteries, oil, garden waste and timber. And don’t forget unwanted clean clothes can also be donated to your favourite charity shop, or placed in your local textile bank; it all helps and really does make a difference!
If the garden is due a tidy-up and you don’t have a compost bin, then check out the current offer from Recycle Now, of home compost bins at specially reduced rates for Hampshire residents. You can order now at www.recyclenow.com/compost or Tel: 0845 077 0757. Alternatively, you can purchase green garden waste sacks from the Town Hall and place them outside your house for collection. Garden waste must not be placed in your green recycling bin.
