Recycle For Life - Not Just For Christmas

Christmas is a busy time of year for us all, but please don’t forget to think ‘green’ as much as you can over the festive season and do your bit to help the environment.

Hopefully many of you will have already started by buying gift tokens as a special treat or recycled gift cards and wrapping paper to help reduce the amount of waste paper. Maybe you have also avoided presents with excess packaging and chosen reusable gift bags to reduce waste. And of course you can always look at purchasing recycled goods wherever possible.

But with Christmas over, don’t give up your good practices, why not have a green New Year too, and make a resolution to reduce, reuse and recycle as much as you can during the whole of 2008.

Remember to place in your green recycling bin:-
  • Christmas cards
  • Cardboard packaging, (not polystyrene)
  • Paper (not gift wrap, shrink wrap, crisp packets, sweet wrappers or foil)
  • Plastic bottles (not plastic trays or packaging used for toys, sweets and gifts)
  • Food tins
  • Drinks cans

Please don’t place glass in your recycling bin as it is dangerous and contaminates the contents. Instead take all your wine and beer bottles to the nearest recycling bank. Likewise textiles and shoes placed in your green bin cause a problem at the sorting facility, so please take them to a recycling bank.

And when the festive season’s run its course why not take your real Christmas tree for shredding. Gosport Borough Council will be holding tree shredding events on:-

  • Sunday 6 January between 10.30am and 2pm at:-
  • Beach Road car park (Lee-on-the-Solent)
  • Stokes Bay Central car park (Pebble Beach)
  • The Range (Elson)
  • Bridgemary Park

Trees can also be taken to the Household Waste Recycling Centre, Grange Road for recycling, or chopped up and placed in green sacks purchased from Gosport Borough Council. Please don’t exceed the 13kg weight limit but buy more sacks if required to accommodate large trees. These will then be collected as usual.

PLEASE DO NOT PLACE TREES OUT WITH OR IN EITHER OF YOUR WHEELED BINS AS THEY WILL NOT BE TAKEN AWAY

Remember that your collection day may be a day early or late over the Christmas period. If you need advice on any of the above, please contact Streetscene on FREEPHONE 08000 198 598, email streetscene@gosport.gov.uk, or visit www.gosport.gov.uk/streetscene
