Gosport Goes Medal Mad at Hampshire Games

Over the weekend more than 250 youngsters competed and represented Gosport at the annual Hampshire Parallel, Youth and Mini Games, which were held in Aldershot.

Organised by the County Sports Partnership, the Games, which attracted over 2500 competitors from all across Hampshire & the Isle of Wight, were held at two venues - the Army Military Garrison and Wavell Cody School, Aldershot.

The aim of the Games is to organise and deliver a multi-sports event for young people from across Hampshire & Isle of Wight, but with an emphasis on having fun and enjoyment - which the Gosport team certainly did!

In fact it was a good year for the Gosport team who, over the 3 days, had success in 9 events, winning trophies and/or medals in the following events:

Parallel Games Friday 22 June
Football Skills – 3rd Place
New Age Kurling – Fair Play Nomination

Youth Games Saturday 23 June

Girls Basketball – 1st Place

Hockey – 2nd Place

Judo – 2nd Place

Netball (Years 9 & 10) – 2nd Place and Fair Play Nomination
Tennis – 2nd Place

Mini Games Sunday 24 June

Girls’ Football – 1st Place
Tennis – 1st Place
Rugby – 2nd Place

Gosport Borough Council’s Sports Development Worker, Mark Reynolds said, “Despite the weather, the event was a resounding success, not only with the number of Gosport teams winning trophies & medals, but more importantly, in the manner in which the Gosport teams and competitors conducted themselves. It was a pleasure to co-ordinate the Gosport team again this year and I would like to thank all the youngsters,  team managers, coaches, volunteers and parents for the time and effort spent prior to the event and on the day of the Games itself.”

The thanks of everyone must also go to the County Sports Partnership Team and the National Governing Bodies of Sports for once again organising this year’s successful event.

The Deputy Mayor of Gosport, Cllr Derek Kimber who attended the event on Saturday said “It is great to see so many young people with the skill and determination to perform so magnificently. They did exceptionally well, achieving some excellent results and they are not just a credit to their family and school or club, but to the Borough as a whole. We are proud of them all.”
