World War ll Commemoration & Veterans Day

This coming Sunday 29 June, Gosport Borough Council will be holding a World War ll Commemoration and Veterans Day Ceremony at Ann’s Hill Cemetery, Gosport.

The Service attended by The Mayor of Gosport, Councillor Derek Kimber, himself a Falkland veteran will begin at 11.00 and will be conducted by The Mayors Chaplain, Reverend Peter Sutton.

The Band of the Royal Electrical Mechanical Engineers (REME) will provide the musical accompaniment and Wayne Coates will sound the last post and reveille.

The Mayor will lay a wreath on behalf of the people of Gosport, and he will be followed by representatives from Service Organisations and the Royal British Legion laying wreaths on behalf of service personnel lost. Wreaths will then be laid at the memorials to the Gosport Civilians killed during the war and to those lost during the first daylight raid.

Service Cadets from the Army, Navy, Air Force and St John’s Ambulance Brigade will take part in the ceremony laying crosses on each of the 92 Allied and 30 German graves.

“Often ceremonies are held to remember the Service Personnel killed during wartime but often the residents of a town that were killed are forgotten,” said the Mayor, Cllr Derek Kimber.

“It is great to know that here in Gosport we will remember them all and that youngsters, some only a few years younger than some of those killed, will play an active part in remembering them.”

The ceremony will begin at 11.00am and all residents and families of those lost are welcome to attend.
