Gosport Borough Council has launched a dedicated website which will provide consumers with information on the hygiene rating of all local food businesses operating in the Borough.
The scheme safe2eat will classify food business as Excellent, Satisfactory or Unsatisfactory, with ratings based upon the existing inspection scoring system contained in the Food Law Code of Practice, issued by the Food Standards Agency.
“This system is already in use for routine inspections of premises and the safe2eat scheme does not impose any additional burdens on businesses,” said Cllr Dennis Wright, Chairman of the Community & Environment Board.
“The majority of premises will be classified as ‘Satisfactory’ and the small numbers that are ‘Unsatisfactory’ will be subject to enhanced enforcement procedures to improve their standards. We also hope, in time, to develop an awards scheme for those premises identified as ‘Excellent’, to encourage others to do better.”
Gosport is leading this initiative in association with Winchester City Council, Basingstoke and Dean Borough Council and Web Labs Limited who have designed the site. It is hoped to eventually provide county wide coverage through safe2eat.
The
safe2eat site can be accessed via the Gosport Borough Council web site on
