On Thursday 10 May the Mayor of Gosport, Councillor June Cully, will welcome the winners of the ‘Gateway to Gosport’ competition to the parlour, to congratulate them on their success in designing a roundabout fit for one of Gosport’s busiest junctions.
Launched last September in the Council’s magazine Coastline, the aim of the competition was to find a design for the overgrown roundabouts near to Fort Brockhurst at Gosport.
It was hoped that designs submitted would not just be interesting and colourful, but would improve safety for both pedestrians and motorists. They also needed to reflect planting of a more sustainable nature to withstand the hotter drier summers that seem to be more prevalent these days.
Delays occurred in selecting the final winners as things like road safety and suitability needed to be agreed with Hampshire County Council, the authority responsible for highways. It is also likely that elements of all three winning designs will be incorporated as some parts are either impractical or would be prohibitively expensive to implement. However, the Council is sure it can deliver a super new welcoming ‘Gateway to the Borough’ from the designs submitted.
1st prize winner, Steve Rogers of Rampart Row, 2nd prize winner, Nina Walsh of Green Crescent and 3rd prize winner, Mike Budden of Malvern Road will join the Mayor in the parlour on Thursday, where they can see each others designs and also receive their prize from the Mayor.
Joining the winners for the presentation will be other Members of the Grounds Maintenance Working Group who chose the winners:- Councillors Hook, Wright, Hicks and Kimber.
Work on the roundabouts, which will be done in three phases. It will begin late summer - early autumn to ensure all nesting birds have left the site; only then will workers begin the job of removing the existing overgrown planting.
