Youngsters Aim to Not Be Noisy Neighbour

Noise may seem like fun to those making it, but  to others it can cause distress and disruption, be it at home, at work, while studying, or even when trying to enjoy some R&R or leisure time.

Because noise affects everyone’s quality of life, Gosport Borough Council’s Pollution Team is planning to visit local Junior Schools in the Borough, throughout the month of May, to undertake Noise Action Week Workshops.  The aim is to show the children (who are in year 5) how the noise they make can affect other people.

The workshops will cover all aspects of noise and by using special monitoring equipment the youngsters will be able to measure just how loud they can be. They will also see how noisy everyday items can be and sadly how easy it is for their hearing to be damaged by such equipment.

“Most youngsters have electrical equipment in their bedrooms these days; TV, DVD player, Electronic games, with older children even plugging IPODs or MP3 players into their ears whilst walking to and from school,” said Claire Terry, Technical Officer for the Council. “Sadly they have no idea of the damage they are doing to themselves or the nuisance they are, in some cases, causing to others. We hope to change all that by making them more aware. We will also include some interactive games that should, by the end of the session, show them how to be better sons and daughters for mum and dad, as well as more considerate neighbours.”

Bruel & Kjaer, who supply the Council’s specialist noise monitoring equipment, have kindly agreed to sponsor a new ‘Bruel & Kjaer’ trophy for the best performing school in a noise awareness competition.  Schools taking part include:-
