Medals Awarded to Beach Buddies

On Tuesday 3 July children from Gomer Junior School, Gosport, will be taking part in a Beach Buddies Beach Clean event on Stokes Bay Beach.

The 20 youngsters are all winners of a competition set by the Beach Buddies Workshop Team, Gosport Borough Council’s Environmental Health Department, Gosport & Fareham Inshore Rescue Society and Hampshire Wildlife Trust.  It was at these workshops that the children learnt important things about the local marine wildlife, Sea Safety and the dangers to wildlife and the marine environment caused by discarded rubbish and beach litter.

“Informing the children of the sort of thing that can occur simply by leaving a plastic sandwich bag, plastic rings from a 4 pack of drink cans, or even a simple rubber band on the beach, can have a tremendous result,” said Claire Terry, Technical Officer with the Pollution Team at Gosport Borough Council. “The children are genuinely shocked to learn that something so simple can result in the death of things like seagulls and dolphins by them ingesting them or getting them caught around their nose, neck or feet, so when they next go to the beach they make doubly sure they all clear up behind them. They also chat to other people and tell them what they have learnt and older people often listen more to a child telling them how important it is to clear up their rubbish than they would an adult”

The Beach Clean event will take place at No. 2 Battery Car Park at Stokes Bay, Gosport at approximately 10am. A Beach Picture design session will follow at around 10.30am involving members of the Council’s Countryside Section.

This will be followed at 11am by the presentation of Medals and Certificates to all the children for their help in keeping Gosport’s Beaches Clean. The presentations will be made by the Mayor of Gosport, Councillor Keith Gill, and a representative of Southern Water, sponsors of the event.
