On Saturday 27 March at 8.30pm, people across the world will be switching off their lights to show support for World Earth Hour – will you?
Gosport Borough Council, who has already introduced several initiatives to reduce electricity usage within the Town Hall, has again signed up to World Earth Hour and hopes residents will too.
World Earth Hour is a call to action to every business, community and individual globally. It’s the public’s chance to show their support for their country to act responsibly and to lead the way forward, towards a sustainable future. Iconic buildings and landmarks worldwide will stand in darkness, whilst people everywhere turn off their lights in contemplation of the one thing we all care about – our planet.
Earth Hour started in Sydney, Australia, in 2007, when 2.2 million homes and businesses turned off their lights for an hour as a stand against climate change. One year on and it had gone global and by March 2009 the UK took part for the first time. More than 4000 cities in 88 countries switched off to pledge their support, making it the world’s largest global climate change initiative.
As well as raising awareness of climate change, Earth Hour is also about working together to create a sustainable low carbon future. We must all accept some responsibility and reduce our energy consumption. Simple things like switching off lights in empty rooms, not using half filled washing machines or dishwashers all help.
To take part simply switch off your lights for an hour at 8.30pm on 27 March. To go one better, why not switch off the TV, get out the candles and explain to your children why you are doing this and how important it is for their future. Together we can make a difference.
